Long Exposure Cityscape Photography at Blue Hour

Photo of the Month (June 2025)

Photographed on 26 June 2025 at Singapore CBD. EXIF: 22mm, f/11, 161 secs, ISO 100.

In recent months, the water around the Singapore CBD has almost always been choppy, making it difficult to capture cityscapes with nice reflections on the water.

I’m not entirely sure what’s causing this. It might have something to do with the nearby Marina Barrage, since the pumping and gate operations there can disturb the surface of the water in the CBD area, but whatever the reason, it’s been significantly limiting my shooting options lately. 😭

So, whenever I come to the CBD and find the water too choppy, I default to this particular spot, because the reflection isn’t the main draw for this shot anyway. Instead, it’s the greenish light that glows beneath the bridge, which usually turns on around 7:10 p.m.

That said, I can’t keep shooting the same shot every time I come to the CBD (I shot this exact same view five times in June 😅), so I’m planning to ditch the CBD and explore other spots outside the CBD in July, though I don’t have many in mind. As a waterfront cityscape enthusiast, I seriously hope the calm water will return to the CBD soon. 🥺

Beautiful shot Joey and what I find interesting is, the water in the green section looks VERY smooth so it’s interesting that the other water isn’t too! Shot looks really good regardless!

Thanks, Daniel! This spot is a bit weird, as the right side of the water doesn’t really smooth out much, even with exposures over 2 minutes. I’ve shot here many times and it’s always like that. 😅
