Long Exposure Photography at Blue Hour, a.k.a. “Last Lights” of the Day, by Joey J πŸ“Έ

What I am Doing Now (16 September 2022)

Besides Nikon Z 6II + Nikon 18-35mm (f/3.5-4.5) which is primarily for my cityscapes with long exposure at blue hour, I do own Olympus PEN E-PL10 and M.Zuiko 17mm (f/1.8) that I’m using for casual shots and when I want nice background bokeh.

PEN is a Micro Four Thirds camera with a crop factor of 2x, so it’s 34mm equivalent (17mm x2) when compared to full frame cameras, which is a good focal length for family snaps, etc.

Personally, I really like Olympus being smaller, lighter (and cheaper πŸ˜…). I’d be happy to shoot everything with Olympus, but unfortunately that’s not happening, because Micro Four Thirds cameras don’t handle long exposure noise well.

I’m now planning to add M.Zuiko 45mm (f/1.8) to the mix (90mm equivalent) to shoot things that require a bit of distance. For example, to shoot a cat with 17mm lens, I need to get very close to them, but 45mm can let me shoot without getting too close.

Of course I could get Nikon 85mm (f/1.8) for that purpose, but I’m thinking about using my Nikon Z 6II specifically for cityscapes, and shoot the rest with Olympus. In fact, I didn’t bring my Z 6II to Bali for my recent trips, as there is no cityscape to shoot in Bali. πŸ˜…

In the near future, I’m hoping to upgrade to Olympus OM-D E-M5 III and let my kid have my PEN to pick up the basic knowledge of photography, though. πŸ˜… Anyway, one thing at a time, as always!

I think it’s a case of once you upgrade one item, it’s hard to resist doing the rest…. Hopefully you can stop after that 45mm! haha.

Sounds like it. πŸ˜… I didn’t buy any gear for years, then I’ve been getting a few this year, a tripod, Z 6II, Olympus 45mm (f/1.8) lens. Two more wishes. Replacing PEN with E-M5 and a new UWA lens for Nikon (this may be next year or later when something new and good is released).

Knowing how things happen, it will probably be when you don’t want to spend any more than the new Nikon lens will be released and you won’t be able to resist haha
