What I am Doing Now (8 July 2022)

Nowadays I’m thinking a lot about retirement. What age to retire, how much I need monthly to survive, how much should be saved by then, etc.

I’m hoping to retire early like 55 (I’m 48 now), freeing up my time to devote myself fully to my IKIGAI (Japanese word for “life purpose”). That said, it’s scary to quit my day job when I’m still having the full time income. But, saying like this, I can never retire. πŸ˜…

People normally retire at around 65, but how many “healthy life years” will be left after that? Or worse, there is not even a guarantee for me to reach 65 (although I have a strong desire to live beyond 100 πŸ˜‚). So, I’ll need to take the plunge, give up the potential income and live the life I want before it gets too late.

Note that I’m neither wealthy nor successful in my career, so it won’t be like “retire early and travel around the world”, unfortunately. Even if I worked until 70, travelling around the world would unlikely be the case. πŸ˜… Nonetheless, I still want to retire early to spend more time on my interests, rather than working for someone else doing things that don’t really matter to me!

In a future post, probably I’ll dive a bit deeper into my so-called retirement planning. πŸ˜…

Interesting post Joey and I guess if you want to do any big spending now is the time too!

Although not sure how feasible it would be, it would be interesting if the norm in society would be to relax and not work until you’re 30 or 40 so you can fully enjoy being young and work in your later life.

I think it’s true! Later in my life, I’ll probably be more hesitant to spend big. πŸ˜… I don’t know who first decided to work 5 days a week, 40 hours a week. This needs to be changed, as the work takes too much time and energy out of our life. πŸ˜…
